Medicinal use: This species along with other members of the same genus are cultivated for their edible tubers, a typical food rich in starch in various parts of the tropics where they are eaten as potatoes. In the cosmetic field, the extract of the root is used as an emollient and soothing agent. In temperate regions, it is used as an ornamental, being planted outdoors, in the ground or in large pots, during the summer and dug up and stored during the winter
