Scientific name: Justicia spicigera
Origin: Mexico and C America
Medicinal use: It is a species of aquatic plant belonging to the Acanthaceae family. This shrub reaches up to 16 m tall with yellow and red flowers hanging from the stem. In Mexico it is distributed from Sonora to the southeast and in the Gulf of Carrasquilla, from Tamaulipas to Yucatán. It is used for different medicinal remedies focused on respiratory, skin and gastric diseases among others. Similarly, its crushed leaves and stems are used as natural dyes.
