Scientific name: Rubia tinctorum
Origin: Mediterranean and S Europe
Medicinal use: In addition to being a good colorant, the root also has laxative properties (at low doses) and purgative (if administered in greater quantity). Its main virtue lies in the fact that it is a diuretic plant: according to various authors, it is a good remedy to combat diseases of the urinary system, especially in cases in which alkalinization of the urine appears, such as a bladder catarrh or a high concentration of phosphates in urine.
