Origin: Mexico and C America
Medicinal use: Lutein can be extracted from the petals of Tagetes erecta through organic solvents. This extract is used in the food industry as a food coloring that gives them a bright yellow color. Oleoresin containing lutein, lutein ester, carotenoids and waxes is first extracted from the dried petals, then the lutein is separated by saponification.
