Scientific name: Opuntia ficus indica
Medicinal use: In Mexico, this cactus, once the thorns are removed, is used in salads, soups, stews and roasts, it is prepared in pickle, it is used to make juice, among many other culinary preparations. It has proteins in scarce proportions, but they are of good quality as they have 9 essential amino acids in their composition. Thus, with nopal we can prepare from a salad, to a sauce, a broth, a main dish such as nopales onions or stuffed nopales.
