Scientific name: Coccoloba uvifera

Family: Polygonaceae

Origin: Caribbean and Tropical Americas

Medicinal use: Tropical plant that requires mild climates without cold, as its large leaves freeze easily, in a sunny or half-shade exposure and on different types of soils. Ideal plant to form barriers in the front row facing the sea, as it tolerates the salinity of the air very well. The roots and bark are used in folk medicine against diarrhea and dysentery. The bark also has tannins used in tanning agents. The fruit can be eaten raw or in jams, and when fermented it produces a drink similar to wine
