Mahogany, West Indies
Scientific name: Swietenia macrophylla
Origin: Caribbean and USA
Medicinal use: Reddish wood, which gives its name to the mahogany color (from reddish brown to red wine), very heavy and solid, so it sinks quickly in the water and rivers cannot be used to float logs to a sawmill. It is a fine-grained wood, ideal for cabinetmaking because it is easy to carve, of great value for making furniture and, in general, it is one of the most valuable woods on the world market.
