Medicinal use: Only a small part of the leaves are used and provides a unique flavor in salads. Cooked leaves lose their strong flavor and can be used as a leafy vegetable. Both fresh and cooked, it is used in Brazilian gastronomy as an ingredient in different dishes, such as tacacá. The chewed leaves and flowers give a tingling sensation on the lips and tongue, due to its local anesthetic action and, therefore, it is used for tooth pain.
