In Iran it is a very widespread and frequent custom to burn the dry seeds, sometimes combined with other ingredients, as incense. The seeds are used as a medicinal remedy, in the form of tinctures. One of its traditional uses is the aphrodisiac.

They are an ingredient for the preparation of some marshmallows and in Ecuadorian nogadas. The juice of the fruit strongly stains hands and clothes.
